Manukau City beat Karaka by 22 runs in the final of the Inder Lynch T20 competition final on Sunday to complete a memorable unbeaten campaign.

They made a glorious start to the decider after winning the toss and batting first, bringing up 50-0 inside the power play overs.

Tayden Smit (39 off 27) and Rikesh Patel (42 off 47) continuing their strong run of form.

But Karaka pulled things back as they began to take the pace off the ball. Spinner Hayden Wark got the key break-through when he had Smit bowled while skipper Luke Williamson made expert use of the slower delivery.

Sandeep Patel continued his strong run of form, scoring 36 off 30 before some late hitting by all-rounder Scott Johnston (28 off 10) helped Manukau City post 159-5.

Johnston and fellow new ball bowler James Naylor then knocked the top off the powerful Karaka top order.

Johnston (3-13) picked up the key wickets of Williamson and Counties Manukau skipper Sam Varcoe while Naylor dismissed the in-form Terrence Otterson cheaply.

Karaka looked out of it at 45-5 in the ninth over but some late hitting by youngster Connor Hooper (38 off 46) and Navjot Sran (39 off 22) took Karaka within touching distance but not close enough for the win.

Earlier Karaka earned their place in the final by comprehensively beating Weymouth by 10 wickets, with Williamson scoring an unbeaten 100.

Southern Counties, who gave themselves an outside chance of making the final with two wins from two on Saturday, lost to Pukekohe Metro earlier on Sunday.
