Pukekohe racer Liam Lawson has finished seventh in the feature race in Formula 2’s latest round in Sochi, Russia.

The teenager took a gamble by starting on the slower medium compound tyre and fell backwards, outside the top 10 before his rivals all pitted on lap 11.

He took over the lead of the race until he had to make his stop on lap 18 and cycled out in eighth position.

During the latter stages of the race, Lawson recorded the fastest lap and managed to finish seventh to leave Sochi with a small haul of points in what proved a disappointing weekend.

He crashed in the wet in the first sprint race while the second sprint was cancelled on safety grounds.

Lawson is eighth in the standings with six rounds to go.
