Pukekohe racer Liam Lawson has finished fourth in the latest round of the Super Formula series in Japan on Sunday night.

Starting from the fourth row of the grid, Lawson picked up a couple of spots thanks to rivals having issues and made up a couple of places by the first corner to be fourth by the end of the opening lap at the famous Suzuka race track.

“We had a really good start, which is something we struggled with at Fuji and after the first lap I was up to fourth,” Lawson said. “When the car was hot, we had a really strong car so the logical thing to do was try the undercut and it nearly worked in getting us the lead but Suzuka’s the worst place to try and follow someone through sector one when they’re on cold tyres.

“So I didn’t push and saved the tyres. We were coming back again really strong when the safety car came out.”

The haul of points moves Lawson up to second in the championship – just one point behind teammate Tomoki Nojiri.

The next race is at Autopolis on May 19-21.
