Pukekohe’s Liam Lawson is set to become a Formula 1 driver after being called into the Alpha Tauri team to replace Daniel Ricciardo at this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.

Lawson, the reserve driver for Red Bull, has replaced the Australian, who broke his hand in a practice crash overnight.

“He’s broken something in his hand, so he won’t race,” Helmut Marko told Motorsport.com.

“Lawson will drive. It’s difficult for him. It’s a shame because the car is good here.”

Lawson has been competing in the Japanese Super Formula class, where he is second in the standings currently.

The former Pukekohe High School student spent the past few seasons as part of the Red Bull driver program and contested Formula 2 last season.

He has driven a Formula 1 car on a couple of occasions in practice.
