Counties Manukau Steelers fans will be pleased to know veteran first-five Baden Kerr has hit top form playing for Karaka in the McNamara Cup.

The former Blues pivot has returned to the region after Covid-19 took a grip on the world. He worked out a deal to play for the PIC Steelers in the Mitre 10 Cup and has been playing for his beloved Karaka club side in recent weeks.

The sharp-shooting goal-kicker has worked himself into top form, scoring 25 points on his own last week as Karaka thumped Onewhero.

“He was our player of the day – he was involved in everything,” Karaka coach Craig Hill told Counties Sports Hub. “He took it to the line and made good options and I think, talking to him after the game, he was really appreciating the talk that he is getting from Cardiff [fellow PIC Steelers rep Cardiff Vaega], who is playing at 12.

“He is looking really good.”

Kerr made his Counties Manukau debut in 2010 and established himself as a reliable goal-kicker with handy range.

The facet of his game is going typically well but it is the other areas of his game that has made Hill more content.

“He missed one kick all day, which was a side-line conversion right on full time and he looks in full control,” Hill said of Kerr’s kicking.

“His defense is outstanding – he is aggressive.

“The talk is massive – the boys look to him a lot. He’s a big asset for us.

“He will be great for Counties. He is looking in good nick.”

Kerr will be favourite to wear the number 10 jersey when new coach Tai Lavea names his first PIC Steelers line-up to tackle defending Mitre 10 Cup champions Tasman on Saturday September 12.
