With Pukekohe Metro’s win over Marist Suburbs in the Spark Regional Cup final, Counties Manukau Cricket’s attention turned to their own Duthie Cup and it was Karaka that made the perfect start to the competition.

In a re-run of the previous weekend’s fixture (albeit in a different competition), Papakura and Karaka locked horns again, with Karaka this time taking on the hosting duties.

The Karaka pitch has been an excellent batting strip all season, and once again this proved to be the case. Papakura chose to have first hit and made a solid start getting to 48 before losing their first wicket. This set a platform for the middle order and elegant young stroke-player Cory Dickson continued his excellent form since returning to the club post his Kings College 1st XI commitments. His 61, along with opener Vishal Abrol’s well-constructed 45, anchored what looked to be a competitive score at the interval.

Promising off-spinner Trey Bidois, was the pick of the Karaka bowlers, picking up three wickets in a miserly fashion.

Post lunch however, the Kura boys ran into a hurricane in the form of Luke Williamson. The former New Zealand Under 19 rep was in a hurry and smashed the bowlers to all corners registering his 110 in just 58 balls.

His main partner in crime was Bidois, who made it an impressive match for him with a quickfire 60 off just 39 balls. The chase was done in less than 30 overs, with Karaka picking up maximum points from this one to take into the Christmas break.

In Senior A Manchester Shield action Waiuku knocked over the Papakura Turf Raiders in the top-of-the-table Pool 1 clash, successfully chasing down 135 in less than 32 overs and for the loss of just three wickets. The result means Waiuku jumps Papakura on the standings.

Weymouth Mighty Kings and Pukekohe Metro Green had wins over Karaka and Manukau City Red respectively to keep their place in the top four in Pool 1.

United enjoyed a big win over Manukau City Rising Caps – the leaders of Pool 2. United had been bowled out for a paltry 118 but they knocked over Manukau City for 112 in a close encounter.

The Manukau City Fearless XI beat Papakura Heat to join their fellow clubmen in a share of the Pool 2 lead while Pukekohe Metro Gold’s seven wicket win over Weymouth sees them join the two Manukau sides atop the standings.

The last match of the week for 2020, features a high scoring and competitive Senior B affair on a perfect summer’s day in Waiuku.

The Weymouth boys had first bat and were well led at the top of the order by their aggressive opener Harvir Sidhu and Narin Barrett. When Barrett fell to left arm unorthodox spinner Harris in the 32nd over, it looked like 260-plus was on the cards, but Waiuku clawed things back with some tight bowling at the death, leaving them a tough but not impossible chase.

The Waiuku innings was highlighted by a courageous hundred from experienced for premier opener Terry Yorke. Fresh off wickets last week, club legend Yorke led from the front, and was ably supported by youngster Lewis Lamont, as Waiuku chased their target valiantly. But in the end, the 244 was a bridge just too far and Weymouth drove back to Manurewa with the points after an exciting day of cricket.

In other games Papakura Blue knocked over the Manukau City Punjab Lions by six wickets – the result moves Papakura into the top four while it was Manukau City’s first loss of the season.

Tuakau beat Karaka by 193 runs to ensure a three-way tie atop the standings. Their 5-1 record matches Manukau City Punjab Lions and Weymouth Eastern Kings, who beat Papakura White.

Weymouth Hardly Athletic beat United Pirates by 73 runs in T20 action to keep second place on the standings.

Clevedon lost for just the third time this season as they went down to Tuakau Turkeys by 3 wickets. The rumoured arrival of former Black Cap Adam Parore would be a handy boost to the Clevedon side halfway through the competition.

Pukekohe Metro Snakebites edged bottom-placed Karaka Mustangs by three runs while the club mates – the Pukekohe Metro Potato Peelers – beat Weymouth Grumpy Old Men by three wickets.
