The Pakuranga Jaguars claimed the final spot in the Fox Memorial Championship despite going down to Manukau Magpies 50-8 on Saturday.

Wing Koronato John’s try-scoring double were among the highlights for the Magpies.

Despite the loss Pakuranga still secured entry to the Fox Championship competition proper, thanks to Papatoetoe producing an upset victory over Manurewa.

The Panthers, winless until this weekend, stunned the Marlins 34-8 to knock the home side out of Fox Championship contention.

Panthers fullback Liki Iloheafaiva and captain Greg Smith led the way, with Papatoetoe going on with the result after leading 12-4 at half time.

The Otara Scorpions gave themselves a confidence boost heading into the second half of the season by upsetting the previously unbeaten Hibiscus Coast Raiders 40-24 on the road.

Otara playmaker Shaq Ono scored twice and converted six of his side’s seven tries.

The Howick Hornets let slip a win against the unbeaten Pt Chevalier Pirates, going down 29-26 in SAS Fox Memorial Premiership qualifying action.

Veteran centre Malo Solomona scored on the full-time siren to ensure Pt Chevalier remain unbeaten through the 11-round Qualifiers, lifting them to victory in a game where they trailed for most of the second half.

The Pirates had led at the break before Howick hit the front, helped along by a strong performance from prop Clayton Williams. But on the very last play of the game Pt Chevalier struck to secure the win at Paparoa Park.

Prop Connor Taurua-Purcell put his membership to the front-rower’s club in jeopardy by scoring three tries for Otahuhu as the Leopards survived a late comeback to beat Bay Roskill 30-28.

The Leopards led 14-4 at the break before Bay came back to lead. Otahuhu then appeared safe after scoring three-consecutive tries late in the match, and while the Vikings finished strong with a pair of four-pointers, they ultimately fell just short.

Mangere East Hawks fell 26-24 to the Marist Saints, who claimed the final spot in the Fox Memorial Premiership as a result.

The Hawks had already booked their spot last week.

Papakura Sea Eagles suffered a 42-10 loss to Glenora although there was little riding on the result.

Local sides Howick, Otahuhu and Mangere East will play in the SAS Fox Memorial Premiership while Manukau, Otara and Pakuranga join Papakura in the Fox Memorial Championship grade.
