The Howick Hornets and Papakura Sea Eagles have advanced to the semi-finals of the Fox Memorial Premiership after playoff wins on Saturday.

The Hornets, who finished round robin in third place, had to work hard to overcome the Marist Saints 18-10 at Paparoa Park.

They book a semi-final at Pt Chevalier next weekend when they face the Pirates for a spot in the decider.

Papakura held on to beat the Otahuhu Leopards 14-10 at Prince Edward Park.

The Sea Eagles shot out to a 12-0 lead before the Leopards came home strong, scoring with five minutes to go to set up a grandstand finish.

But the Sea Eagles held their nerve, kicking a late penalty to secure the win.

They face the Richmond Bulldogs in next weekend’s semi-finals.

In the consolation bracket, the Manukau Magpies beat Bay Roskill Vikings 44-18 while the Glenora Bears handed the Mangere East Hawks a 90-8 hiding.

In the Sharman Cup, the Manurewa Marlins fought hard but ultimately went down 32-22 to the Ponsonby Ponies while the Papatoetoe Panthers picked up a win by default over the Glenfield Greyhounds.

In Women’s Premiership action, the Howick Hornets thumped the Manurewa Marlins 52-6 in their final round robin game to top the standings and claim the minor premiership.

The Otara Scorpions lost to Mt Albert 38-8.

The Hornets host City Rugby League in one semi-final while the Scorpions will meet Mt Albert in the other.
