Kiwi racer Scott Dixon’s sixth Indycar championship on Monday morning has started fresh debate about where the Manurewa product ranks in the hierarchy of the sport.

His sixth title puts him within one title of the legendary AJ Foyt, who has won more championships than any other in the history of United States single-seater racing (Indycar and its predecessors).

The 40-year-old Dixon’s 50 Indycar race wins puts him third all-time behind Foyt (67) and the great Mario Andretti (52).

With time still on Dixon’s side to at least overhaul Andretti in race wins and match Foyt with titles, could he be considered the greatest of all time?

“Absolutely,” Andretti told Autoweek after Dixon’s triumph at St Petersburg on Monday.

“You look at his record of championships and wins, and we are absolutely in good company. I love the guy, I love what he stands for. He’s definitely one of the best ever.”

Dixon has stated he has maybe five years of racing competitively left in him – plenty of time to improve on those numbers and make his case even more compelling.
