The Counties Manukau Tennis Association Interclub finals will take place this week with winners crowned in all grades barring Premier.

Patumahoe Pascoes will face Pukekohe Truter next Friday night in the Premier Grade final at Counties Tennis Centre in Pukekohe.

Patumahoe will be led by number one Sam Pascoe and number two Peter Schreuder while Callum Pascoe will complete the line-up.

Sam Pascoe (20) has played continuously for Patumahoe Tennis Club since starting the sport at age five following the family love of tennis. He has competed with some success at many Auckland Junior tournaments and is the current Patumahoe Club Senior Champion. He also held the Pukekohe High School Junior, Intermediate and Senior Tennis trophies and plays number one for Pukekohe’s team in the Auckland Interclub Men’s competition. Renowned for a casual and relaxed style of tennis and some unbelievable winners that seem to come out of nowhere. Paired with power hitter Schreuder this duo are a great doubles combination with one unusual characteristic: They do not talk on the court and simply seem to know where each other are. They have won most of their doubles games this season enabling the boys to make the finals again this year.

Schreuder (26) started his tennis as a young boy in the Netherlands, emigrating to New Zealand to settle in Patumahoe in 2003. He is a tennis enthusiast travelling to all four grand slam tournaments from 2017 to 2019, most recently attending the French Open and Wimbledon just before COVID closed the opportunities for travelling to witness world class tennis. His serves on song are virtually unreturnable, a power hitter with great ability to cover the court.

The Pukekohe team features 43-year-old club champ regular Michael Truter, who has lost just one singles match from 11 this summer and only two doubles losses from 11. Craig Inger, who had just four losses from 16 matches across both singles and doubles this season, and doubles specialist Tim Vaughan complete the Pukekohe line-up. Vaughan was once ranked inside the world’s top 100 when he was living in the United Kingdom. He played Caro Bowl Reserve grade for Mission Bay and Remuera upon returning to New Zealand but hasn’t played much in the past decade.

Runciman D&J meets Pukekohe Richards in the third v fourth playoff in Pukekohe on Friday night while Patumahoe Martinovich plays Patumahoe Hobs in the fifth v sixth battle at Patumahoe Tennis Club at the same time.

The Grade 1 final sees Bombay Bombay face Waiuku Steelers in Pukekohe on Friday night. Bombay’s team includes Andy Dickson, Eddie Keene, captain Eric O’Brien and Len Brennan. Dickson and Keene have both lived in New Zealand for over a decade but hail from South Africa. O’Brien is a former New Zealand road cycling champion and representative. The Waiuku team will feature Adam Hood, Ryan Crawford, Marty Foote and Richard Cloetzee.

Pukekohe Blue takes on Pukekohe Barracudas in the third v fourth playoff while Pukekohe East Acers and Pukekohe East TopSpins square-off in the fifth v sixth playoff.
