Kiwi racer Scott Dixon has added another what if story to his Indianapolis 500 collection after leading for the majority of the race.

The Manurewa product started from pole and dominated throughout, leading unto his final pitstop when it all went astray for the Chip Ganassi racer.

Dixon was penalised for speeding in pitlane and was given a penalty that dropped him out of contention. He eventually finished 21st.

“It’s just heart-breaking to be honest,” Dixon said. “It must’ve been very close [to the limit], I came into the pits and locked the rears, then kinda locked all four, so I knew it would be close and I think it was a mile an hour over or something.

“The car was really good all day, we had really good speed, the team did an amazing job on strategy. I just messed up.”

The 2008 race winner has been the dominant driver of his generation but has a long history of misfortune at the famous Brickyard.

Dixon’s teammate – ex-Formula 1 star Marcus Ericsson – won the 106th running of the great race.
