Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen has made the perfect start by winning the opening race of round two of the Supercars Championship in Melbourne but he narrowly avoided disaster.

Van Gisbergen, the two-time defending series champion, had a big moment during practice when he lost control of his Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro down the back part of the circuit and had a wild spin that saw him clip the wall at both ends of the car.

The damage ruled him out of the second practice session, missing vital set-up time, but still managed to qualify on the second row of the grid.

He made his way quickly to the front in the race and never relented the lead to earn a crucial 75 championship points.

There are three more races across the weekend, part of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix event.
