Manurewa racer Scott Dixon has endured a tough weekend at Mid-Ohio as he claimed successive 10th-placed finishes to see his title advantage shrink.

The Chip Ganassi driver had a tough run in qualifying for Sunday’s race and fought back from 17th to finish 10th but dropped 20 points to his nearest title rival American Josef Newgarden.

He started Monday’s race in much better shape and found himself in the top three to start with but made an uncharacteristic mistake early on, spinning on lap 22 and dropping to 20th.

The five-time series champion fought back well however to get back to 10th and minimise the damage.

Newgarden could only muster eighth while Pato O’Ward (third in the standings) was ninth.

“I got a little aggressive, total rookie mistake,” Dixon said. “I’m so bummed for the team, it was such a stupid mistake.”

The 40-year-old Kiwi’s title lead is now 72 points with three races remaining in the season.

The championship returns to the Indianapolis road course for the Harvest GP double-header on October 2-3.
