Kiwi racer Scott Dixon was involved in a title-changing crash at Gateway on Sunday as the Indycar Championship lead changed hands

Dixon and Chip Ganassi teammate Alex Palou, who had the championship lead heading into the race, were taken out on lap 65 by Rinus Veekay.

Palou was unable to continue while Dixon limped back to the pits, where his team made enough repairs for the defending series champion to get back out on track and be classified as a finisher.

He finished 19th and is now 43 points behind new leader Pato O’Ward, who came home second to Josef Newgarden.

“We ran until we could make up the spots we could and that was it,” Dixon said.

“I feel really bad for myself and Alex. I really don’t know what Veekay was doing.

“It is going to be tough, but we have to make the most of it.

“If we can have three strong races to finish the season then we are not out.”
