Pukekohe Netball Centre is planning on staging their finals day whenever the COVID Alert Levels drop down to allow them to complete the 2021 season.

The semi-finals in senior and junior grades were completed the weekend before the country was forced into Level 4 lockdown, leaving just 24 matches left to be played on finals day to complete the season.

Unlike many other codes that are hamstrung by needing access to venues that are shared by multiple sports and the council’s need for maintenance in between seasons, netball has its own facilities and can delay the season as long as they like.

The only thing for them to consider is that some players may have summer sport commitments if this drags on too long.

“We are hoping to be able to play our finals day and finish off the season.” Pukekohe Netball Centre general manager Maree Bernasconi told Counties Sports Hub.

“We have pushed our Fun Ferns and Future Ferns out until October and will run that through until December now.

“There are only 24 matches left across all grades so we could look at playing some of them a night.

“We will set trainings so that every team gets the same number of trainings before playing but we cannot do anything until we are at least at Level 2. There is no netball until Level 2.”

Football and rugby league are continuing to look at the possibilities of being able to re-start their seasons but the clock is starting to work against them.
