Sandeep Patel’s maiden representative century hasn’t been quite enough to get Counties Manukau first innings points in their Fergus Hickey Rosebowl match against Northland over the weekend.

Having won the toss and decided to bat first at Mountfort Park, Counties Manukau made a good fist of things, scoring 362/9 off 100 overs.

Patel, batting at number four, scored 118 to power the home side’s innings. He was ably assisted by openers Sam Varcoe (61) and Aue Parima (76) as well as 46 from first drop Luke Williamson.

But when Cory Dickson was the fourth man dismissed with the score on 276, the wheels fell off a little.

Counties Manukau lost their next six wickets for just 86 runs.

Patel, who has played for the Northern Districts A side, was delighted to reach triple figures for the first time.

“Pretty cooked – it was a long day but I thought the boys played pretty well,” Patel said after the opening day.

“The boys set it up in the morning Sam and Aue and the top order did really well and helped me do what I wanted to do.

“It is nice getting my maiden hundred – it has been a long time coming and I am pretty happy with that.”

In reply, Northland were able to string together partnerships and they got themselves to 345/9 – needing a further 18 runs with their last two batsmen at the crease.

Nathan Parkes and Josh Cunis calmly got their side to the target to earn first innings points in a tight affair.
