Papakura picked up a crucial Duthie Cup win and their first of the campaign when they thrashed Manukau City by 107 runs in Counties Manukau Cricket action at War Memorial Park on Saturday.

The impressive Cory Dickson led the Papakura side with the bat as he contributed 82 off 113 to help the visitors through to 271/6 off their 50 overs.

Contributions from Hayden Dickson (53 off 51), Hemadri Chakraborty (33 off 55) and an unbeaten 55 off 43 from Jaggy Singh got Papakura to a competitive total and backed the decision to have first dig.

After losing an early wicket rep stars Sandeep Patel and James Naylor took Manukau City to 49 before Naylor was dismissed for 28. Le-Shur Vermeulen went for 11 and when Patel was caught on 39 with the score at 105 the chase started to wobble.

Cory Dickson backed up his batting with a miserly spell of bowling – going for just 20 off nine overs. Wickets were shared around with Levi Pahina and Usama Usama each snaring a brace.

Pukekohe Metro continued their winning run on Saturday as they successfully chased down 174 to beat Karaka at Bledisloe Park in Pukekohe.

The home side won the toss and inserted Karaka but that decision looked like it may have been the wrong one as Karaka made a bright start.

Terrence Otterson and Counties Manukau men’s captain Sam Varcoe enjoyed a 50-run opening stand before Varcoe was caught off the bowling of Leon Marconi for 34.

Wickets fell at steady intervals from that point on with Otterman putting up the only significant resistance. He made 51 off 78 balls.

Karaka were eventually all out for 174 in the final over of the innings.

Marcel Marconi was the pick of the bowlers – taking 4/44 while spinner Kurt Barnes picked up 3/20 off his 10 overs.

Karaka needed early wickets and their bowlers delivered, knocking over the Pukekohe top order. Openers Michael Schofield (3/28) and Cameron Jerram (3/52) were the chief destroyers as they reduced the home side to 49/6 in the 11th over.

But a calm partnership between Leon Marconi (33) and Reid Somani (34) got Pukekohe’s chase back on track.

When they were dismissed it looked like the match would come down to the wire but number 10 Barnes hammered an unbeaten 48 off 36 balls to carry his side to victory.

Pukekohe Metro were due to meet Manukau City on Sunday as a make-up game for one missed prior to Christmas but rain forced its abandonment.

The top two sides heading into the weekend in Manchester Shield Senior A action both lost to really condense the standings.

Tuakau made hard work of it but a mature 62 from Kieran West and a match-winning cameo by Dayne Game got the home side to victory in the historic occasion.

Papakura White’s loss however means Glenbrook are guaranteed a top six spot regardless of next week’s results.
