Karaka has won the W.H Taylor Shield after completing a comprehensive nine wicket outright win over Weymouth in the final at Karaka Sports Complex on Sunday.

The home side picked up the last two wickets they needed overnight to bowl Weymouth out for 154 and then experienced representative batsmen Sam Varcoe (50 not out) and Luke Williamson (40 not out) guided Karaka to the target of 95 for the loss of just one wicket.

Varcoe celebrated his 100th game for the club in style, scoring 69 in the first innings to go with his unbeaten half century in the second dig while Williamson took 5-40 in Weymouth’s second innings to set up the win.

Karaka adds the two-day title to the Duthie Cup one day final title they won last month and finished runner up to Manukau City in the Inder Lynch T20 competition.

As a result, they claim the Warin Cup for the combined results across all three formats – the oldest trophy awarded in Counties Manukau Cricket.

After winning the toss and inserting Weymouth on Saturday, experienced swing bowler Stuart Kett took 5-20 to bowl Weymouth out for just 92.

Aside from Varcoe’s patient 62, the Karaka batsmen found the slow-paced wicket difficult to score on and the home side managed just 154 all out – a lead of 62.

Weymouth were aggressive in their second innings, knowing they had to make the play as they chased the game. Opener Manpreet Singh made 49 as Weymouth made 155 all out.

The visitors had some hope for an outright win when they had Terrence Otterson dismissed early but Varcoe and Williamson calmly powered Karaka to the title.
