Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen recorded his 50th career Supercars race win on Sunday as he completed his second late race charge to victory in succession over the weekend in Townsville.

The Red Bull Ampol racer trailed teammate Jamie Whincup for the majority of the 250km-long race before reeling him in during the final stint in a carbon copy replay of Saturday’s race.

Van Gisbergen, who hails from Manukau City, extended his championship lead to 243 points on the back of his 10th race win of the season.

The 32-year-old becomes the sixth driver to have reached the 50-win mark and the second Kiwi behind Scott McLaughlin. He joins Craig Lowndes, Whincup, Mark Skaife and Garth Tander to have achieved the feat.

Competitors will return to the Townsville circuit next weekend for a second round at the half park, half street circuit.
