Counties Manukau’s Scott Dixon has finished sixth in Monday’s Indycar race at Mid-Ohio as he remains third in the championship battle.

American Josef Newgarden won for the fifth-straight time on ovals.

Dixon followed fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin over the finish line but dropped a few more points to Chip Ganassi teammate and runaway championship leader Alex Palou, who was third.

“Honestly, the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda was very good,” said Dixon.

“We may have gone a bit too long on our stints and got undercut. It was a frustrating day, as we had moved up to third, were then challenging for second and then ended up sixth.

“This is definitely a fun track. It’s obviously more fun when things go right, but that’s not always possible.”

Dixon is 120 points behind Palou and 40 behind Newgarden.

The next round is in Nashville on August 6.
