The formation of an Auckland Super Racing club looks more likely with Counties Racing Club’s proposed merger with Auckland Racing Club set to go to vote next month.

Both clubs held forums to discuss the move yesterday and positive feedback was received, paving the way forward for a formal vote to take place at the end of June at special meetings.

The merger would see the formation of Auckland Turf Club as the new identity with all major race meetings held at Ellerslie while Pukekohe Park will be used for more industry-level race days.

Training facilities in Pukekohe will also be developed.

Part of the plan would involve selling off the famed steeplechase hill at Ellerslie, which will upset many traditionalists but its value of $100m and the fact it is used only 10 times a year means a sale would make the sport’s future in Auckland far more sustainable.
