Counties Manukau Rugby is mourning the passing of long-time player, coach and administrator Ashleigh Graham “Beatle” Brougham.

An iconic figure in the Counties Manukau community, Brougham passed away on Boxing Day after a long battle with illness.

His long association with rugby in the area began as a no-nonsense player before going on to forge a successful career as a coach and later as an administrator.

Brougham was particularly passionate about the community game and contributed massively to it over a long period and was heavily involved with both the Bombay Rugby Club and the Karaka Rugby Club.

He was an inspirational figure in Maori rugby at a national level and for his beloved Counties Maori, who he championed at any opportunity.

“Beatle was such a massive contributor to our sport and particularly in this region,” Counties Manukau Rugby President Jim Coe said.

“He was a tireless worker who gave massively for the betterment of the game and will be sadly missed.

“We cannot thank Beatle enough for the massive amount of mahi he has done for Counties Manukau Rugby and for Counties Maori.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
