Ardmore Marist will look to defend their National Club Sevens title at Bruce Pulman Park this weekend as the cream of club rugby heads to the region to try and pry away the Middlesex County Wavell Wakefield Cup.

The cup has a long history having been offered to dominions or territories by the MCRFU in 1949. New Zealand and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) accepted invites.

In over 60 years of competition, it has been held by 29 individual winners – 14 North Island clubs and 15 South Island clubs – and between the years of 1954 and 1978 it crossed the Cook Strait 10 times.

It is generally contested by clubs that have won their provincial sevens competition and been invited by the holder.

Ardmore Marist has the right to host the tournament as current holders.

The only other time it has been staged in the region was back in 1954 when Ardmore Teachers College won the tournament.

“We are really excited to have the opportunity to host the Middlesex Cup this year, especially considering that mid-way through 2020 we were resigned to the possibility that COVID restrictions would see the tournament cancelled,” club manager Kelly Flavell explained.

“There is a bit of a buzz around the club at the moment and we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone next weekend,” she said.

“Our organising committee and the Ardmore Marist community wishes all teams the very best for their final week of preparation and we hope that everyone enjoys the tournament and has a safe return home over the long weekend.”

Kick off at Bruce Pulman Park, Takanini is at 9am on Saturday and the Cup final is scheduled to finish at 5pm.  The tournament draw will be posted on Facebook on Monday evening.
